Bucephalandra Crocodile Land

Bucephalandra Crocodile Land is an aptly named variety whose broad, dark green to olive leaves feature a deeply ridged, textured surface reminiscent of crocodile skin — a tactile and visual quality that sets it apart from all other Bucephalandra varieties. The leaves can also display iridescent sheens of blue, teal, or bronze depending on lighting, adding a layer of color complexity to an already visually fascinating plant.

Planting tip: Bucephalandra Crocodile Land can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

Native to Indonesia, Crocodile Land can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. Like all Bucephalandra, it has the wonderful ability to produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.

This variety reaches 2 to 4 inches and grows well in low to moderate lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation. It prefers temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 5.5 to 7.0 — note the slightly lower pH preference compared to many other Bucephalandra, reflecting its specific natural habitat requirements.

In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Crocodile Land is an exceptional textural accent that creates visual depth and organic complexity wherever it is placed. The deeply ridged leaf surface interacts with aquarium light in a way that flat-leaved plants simply cannot, creating shadows and highlights across each individual leaf. It pairs beautifully with smooth-surfaced plants and polished stone, where the contrast between rough and smooth textures is most striking. Shrimp are particularly attracted to the ridged leaf surface for grazing.
