Bucephalandra Afika is a rare and desirable variety featuring dark elongated leaves on reddish stems that give the plant a moody, refined elegance characteristic of the most coveted Bucephalandra cultivars. The deep, rich color of the foliage combined with the warmth of the red stems creates a visually sophisticated plant that rewards careful placement in any planted aquarium or aquascape.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Afika can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, Afika can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. Like all Bucephalandra, it can occasionally produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Bucephalandra Afika is a compact variety reaching 2 to 4 inches, well suited for foreground to midground placement. It grows well in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation and adapts comfortably to temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Consistent liquid fertilization supports the health and depth of color in the dark, elongated leaves.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Afika is most effective as an accent plant on featured hardscape where its dark foliage and reddish stems can be appreciated up close. The elongated leaf form creates a graceful contrast with rounder-leaved plants and compact mosses. In nano tanks it is a showstopper; in larger layouts it adds a sophisticated dark accent that anchors sections of the composition.
Bucephalandra Afika is a rare gem for collectors who appreciate the darker, more dramatic end of the Bucephalandra color spectrum. Its elegant leaf form, reddish stems, and legendary ease of care make it a deeply rewarding plant to keep and display.
