Once installed and the engine cycles through a full drive, the ECU will retest the circuit. If the sensor was your issue, the light should clear. If it stays on, there's another problem in the fuel or ignition system.

Do I need to disconnect the battery before swapping this out?

Not required for safety, but disconnecting for 30 seconds after install helps the ECU recognize the new sensor faster. Either way, your scan tool can force a retest if you're impatient.
