This choker is just exquisite; you won't find modern pieces made with this quality or attention to detail. It was made in the early 20th Century, most likely in China. To appreciate the craftsmanship of this necklace, one needs to understand the process of making cloisonné. Derived from the French word cloison (meaning "to separate") in this process fine metals are soldered to create an outline of the desired pattern. These compartments are filled with different colors of opaque enamel, and the metallic outline emphasizes the intricacy of the design. I especially appreciate the tubular shape of the choker, with the design extending 360-degrees, visible from every angle. It opens with a hinge, and the interior diameter measures 4. 75", with a thickness of 3/8".
Great antique condition. Inside the metal hinge, there is some wear to the metal, but it's not noticeable when worn.
