The shawl is hand-woven and embroidered by women of the Dongria Kondh - a particularly vulnerable tribal group residing in the Niyamgiri hills of Rayagada. This design primarily depicts their village boundaries, houses, hills, and agricultural fields. The contrasting colors, red, green, brown, and yellow symbolize nature. Handmade by a vulnerable tribal group, every shawl is a little bit different from the others based on the way they make it. They portray ease and nature, each weave represents their surroundings and local folklore mythologies. The tribe has worn these shawls as their identity for generations.
