The patterns are formed by iron oxide and earth deposited in layers over millions of years. • History: Jasper is one of the oldest stones used by humans. It appears in the Book of Exodus as one of the twelve stones on the Breastplate of Aaron. It appears again in the Book of Revelation as a foundation stone of heaven. The ancient Greeks carved jasper into seals. In ancient mythology, the god Marduk was said to have formed heaven from jasper. Landscape jasper is named for its natural patterns that look like scenery. These patterns are not painted or treated. They are the result of millions of years of deposits, where mud and volcanic ash settled in layers and turned to stone. The dark branch-like patterns that look like trees or moss are caused by minerals seeping through cracks in the stone long after it formed.
• The Belief: In modern crystal practice, landscape jasper is a root chakra stone. It is said to strengthen a connection to the earth, stability, and a sense of perspective during difficult times. It is sometimes called the stone of global awareness because it encourages a wider view of the world.
