This beautiful 1989 Czechoslovak stamp, valued at 5 Kčs, showcases the Carpathian Newt (Triturus montandoni) in its natural aquatic habitat. Issued in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), it highlights conservation efforts for this delicate amphibian species native to the Carpathian Mountains. Designed by R. Hamsíková and engraved by M. Ondráček, the illustration features two vividly colored newts amid aquatic plants and soft blue water tones, emphasizing the species’ vibrant orange underside and spotted brown dorsal pattern.

This issue forms part of a series promoting wildlife preservation across Czechoslovakia in the late 1980s, a period when environmental awareness gained prominence in Eastern Europe.
