Sea Hare

In the wild, the Sea Hare can be found in shallow, sandy, shaded areas. In your tank, the Sea Hare will require lots of space to move, as well as plenty of live rock and sandy area to graze. The Sea Hare requires cover from light in your tank.

Sea Hares produce a dark purple dye when startled, it can become toxic to the rest of your tank if not cared to immediately. You should consider having a good chemical filter system in your tank to remove these toxins quickly.

The Caribbean Sea Hare (Aplysia dactylomela) is a large, gentle sea slug best known for its algae-eating abilities and unique appearance. Its soft body is typically tan to brown with dark ring or blotch patterns, giving it a natural, camouflaged look that blends well into reef and lagoon-style aquariums. Despite its size, this species is slow-moving and peaceful.

Native to Caribbean waters, the Sea Hare spends most of its time grazing on nuisance algae across rockwork and glass. In the aquarium, it is often used as a natural solution for controlling hair algae in established systems. Because of its constant feeding behavior, it does best in tanks with an ample and ongoing algae supply.

The Caribbean Sea Hare is reef safe and will not harm corals or fish. It should be housed with peaceful tankmates, as it has no defenses against aggressive species. Like many sea slugs, it can release ink when stressed, so stable water conditions and gentle handling are important for long-term success.

This species feeds primarily on algae but may also accept dried seaweed once acclimated. When algae levels decline, supplemental feeding is recommended to prevent starvation. With proper care and adequate food availability, the Sea Hare can be a helpful and fascinating addition to a saltwater aquarium. The Sea Hare will also eat Caulerpa; if/when that is not available, they will also eat parboiled lettuce and dry kelp.
