Radiant, One of a Kind Make Do Edwin and Mary Scheier Vessel with Hand Hammered Copper FootThis one I think is especially special, and of all the things I'm listing today it's the one I'm most tempted to keep for myself, embodying a concise and radiant distillation of many things I value. This one I think is especially special, and of all the things I'm listing today it's the one I'm most tempted to keep for myself, embodying a concise and radiant distillation of many things I value. The vessel is the work of widely renowned mid-century ceramicists Edwin and Mary Scheier, whose work I've always got an eye out for and turns up not too infrequently in these parts, as they spent many years teaching in New Hampshire. What makes this piece quite singular though is the foot and the story it tells. Turning it upside down reveals that the original foot of pot was damaged--glaze pooling forced it to be cut out of the kiln I believe--but I, and the dealer I purchased it from, believe that the Scheiers were so pleased with the glazing that they proceeded to have a custom hand-hammered copper foot made for it in order to salvage it.  And so, something of a make do hybrid, and, especially with its tea bowl form, feels like a bit of a nod to Kintsugi (Japanese pottery mending with gold or silver) too. And I love the thought that the Scheiers refused to let it go, but rather plucked it for a special sort of honoring. All happy things. And it glows.

4 7/16" in diameter x 3 3/4" tall. Very good condition, no chips or cracks or stains, just the hand-hammered copper foot making its original damage a special attribute.
