SOLD Early 1850s Hand-drawn Ink and Watercolor Map of South AmericaI managed to find the published map this hand drawn one was based on, printed as a engraving in Samuel Augustus Mitchell's(1792 1868) Mitchell's School and Family Geography, 1839. Though interesting now to see Chili spelled with an "i" and Buenos Ayres as a country, etc., this hand drawn version is pretty true to the published one except a million times better for being hand done! Excellent hand lettering in a young hand all over, and wonderful

I managed to find the published map this hand-drawn one was based on, printed as a engraving in Samuel Augustus Mitchell's(1792-1868) Mitchell's School and Family Geography, 1839. Though interesting now to see Chili spelled with an "i" and Buenos Ayres as a country, etc., this hand-drawn version is pretty true to the published one--except a million times better for being hand done!

Excellent hand-lettering in a young hand all over, and wonderful topographic embellishment in ink, plus watercolor borders.  Signed at bottom Abiel A Livermore--who I've found: he was the nephew of Abiel Abbott Livermore (1811-1892), a well known Congregational minister, president of Meadville Theological School (PA), and publisher of the Christian Inquirer. This Abiel Abbot Livermore who created this map was born in 1838 in Wilton, NH (not far from where I found it) and died at the young age of 25 in 1863  in Port Hudson, Louisiana, I presume in the Civil War. The map would have been done by him in a geography class as a student, very late 1840s/very early 1850s.

Framed, as found: 13 7/8" x 10 3/4". Sight: 12 3/8" x 9 1/4". Good condition, with scattered foxing and toning. Clear and bold and completely readable.
