This French 1.00 franc stamp was issued in 1976 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun—one of World War I’s most decisive and devastating engagements. The design, by Pierre Forget and engraved by Claude Cahuzac, shows a milestone from the Voie Sacrée (“Sacred Way”), the supply road that kept the French army linked to Verdun throughout the 1916 battle. Topped by a soldier’s helmet and framed by stylized barbed-wire patterns, the image honors the courage and endurance of those who defended the fortress city. A fitting philatelic tribute to France’s wartime resilience.
