A listed artist, Hiram Campbell Merrill (1866-1958) was a Boston-born painter and engraver, who in addition to pursuing his own art worked for Harpers magazine in New York. This drawing was made on a trip to Brittany in 1909, during which he made studies that provided material for many later paintings and engravings. And a really lovely drawing it is, of a sprig of a branch with a few furling leaves, which he executed in Taden (a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department of Brittany in northwestern France), and which he noted on the drawing, dated May 1909.
Excellent condition, executed on cream colored, lightweight board, with a couple of stray pencil marks on the lower part of the drawing. 8 1/4" t x 5 1/4" w. Unframed.
