Mature males display the striking black-and-red coloration characteristic of many Eresus species, while females are typically dark gray to black and may exhibit an orange or yellow ring around the abdomen. Among velvet spiders in captivity, Eresus walckenaeri is one of the most popular species due to its attractive coloration and straightforward care requirements.

Eresus walckenaeri Care

Eresus walckenaeri is a hardy velvet spider that adapts well to captive conditions and thrives in a dry enclosure, making it suitable for both new and experienced keepers. This species creates a silken retreat using available substrate and décor, spending much of its time within its burrow.

• Enclosure: 3.5-dram vial or equivalent for spiderlings, upgraded as needed with growth; 4” cube or larger for adults
• Substrate: Dry sphagnum moss or paper towels
• Temperature: 70–85°F
• Humidity: Dry conditions preferred; excessive moisture can be harmful
• Diet: Fruit flies, crickets, cockroaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects
• Water: Most hydration comes from prey items, though larger specimens may occasionally be offered water

Routine maintenance is minimal, consisting primarily of removing uneaten prey and spot cleaning when necessary.

Natural History

This velvet spider occurs throughout parts of Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Syria. In nature, Eresus walckenaeri constructs silken retreats beneath rocks and within natural crevices, where it remains concealed while waiting for prey. Syrian populations show significant genetic divergence from western populations and may represent an undescribed species.
