HMS Amphion was a Leander class light cruiser launched in 1934. She entered service in the Royal Navy on 6 July 1936 becoming the Flagship of the 6th Cruiser Squadron on the Africa Station, mainly involved in "Showing the flag" cruises. On the 3 December 1938 the Commander in Chief transferred to HMS Neptune and Amphion left Simonstown for the last time. The Australian government purchased the ship and commissioned her into the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS Perth at Portsmouth on 29 June 1939.
