Golestan-throne register, Tehran late-Qajar, restated in 1200 Reeds

The late-Qajar Tehran court (c. 1850–1900) commissioned a specific category of carpet for the audience halls of the Golestan Palace and adjacent reception rooms: deep crimson ground, gold-thread illumination at the medallion and corners, palmette and lotus motifs lifted from royal book-binding manuscripts of the same period, and a composition deliberately built for processional viewing — the eye reads the medallion first from a distance, the corners on approach, the field detail only at conversation range. These were ceremonial pieces. They were not for circulation.

This 1200 Reeds machine-woven piece quotes that register. The crimson and gold work, the centered medallion-and-corner architecture, the manuscript-illumination palette — all of it is design-language reference. It is not a Qajar court rug, not Tehran, not hand-knotted. What carries is the imperial-commission visual logic.

How it feels in a room

Ceremonial. The crimson ground reads dense under any light, and the gold illumination catches warm incandescent in a way that flatters portrait frames, gilt mirrors, and dark furniture. Best for rooms that exist for occasion rather than everyday traffic — formal dining, formal living, a reception foyer, the room where you receive guests but do not park groceries. Under cool LED the gold reads paler and the field flattens; this is unambiguously a warm-light rug.

Care

Not a machine-washable rug. Treat as ceremonial-room flooring. Vacuum monthly in low-traffic rooms; the dense imperial weave is forgiving of occasional use. Blot any spill promptly with a clean dry cloth — never agitate the pile. Professional clean every 24–30 months for formal rooms.

Designer styling

Pairs with dark mahogany, gilt-framed art, brass fixtures, oxblood or claret leather, and damask or velvet upholstery. Anchors a formal dining room or formal living room. Works against deep-green or deep-blue painted walls where the crimson does not compete. Avoid pairing with strong patterned wallpaper — the medallion needs the wall as backdrop, not as rival.
