Originally written in French and published in Paris by Michel Levy Freres Editeurs in 1870 with the title, Luzon et Mindanao, Extraints d'un Journal de Voyage dans I'extreme Orient, this book provides a glimpse of Luzon and Mindanao during the period, particularly during the pacification campaign in Mindanao participated in by the author. His name did not appear in the French publication and identified only in the English translation of E. Aguilar Cruz as Duc D' Alencon. Interestingly, the book description of the Library of Congress of the 1870 publication includes the author's full name, Ferdinand Philippe Marie d'Orleans (1844-1910).
