This piece pulls from Aubusson and Beauvais court weaving as practiced under Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. When Persian medallion vocabulary reached the French royal manufactories in the late 17th century, weavers softened it for European interiors: oval rather than round medallions to flatter rectangular salon proportions, lighter cool palettes for the new neoclassical taste, and the muted ribbon-and-floral borders that became the European drawing-room standard through the 18th century.

The result is a Persian-tradition rug filtered through a French court sensibility. Distinct from the cohort's strictly Persian registers — the Kashan formal sibling stays inside the Iranian court idiom; this one acknowledges the European mediation. Distinct also from the Mughal sibling, which is ceremonial declaration; this is the salon's elegant cousin.

The navy frame around the oval is the visual signature — it borrows the European convention of color-blocking the medallion against the field, a device almost never seen in classical Persian weaving.

How it feels underfoot

Spot-clean with mild detergent; low-suction vacuum; professional clean every 18–24 months. Not a machine-washable rug.

Stocked in the canonical cohort run: 3×6, 3×10, 5×7.5, 6.5×10, 8.2×11.5, and 10×13 ft. Oval medallions flatter rectangular floor plans — strongest at 5×7.5, 6.5×10, and 8.2×11.5. The oval reads correctly when the rug itself is decidedly rectangular; at 10×13 (squarer ratio) the oval medallion can feel under-scaled to the field.

Built for European-influenced interiors. Pairs with:

• Wood: French walnut, painted-and-distressed casegoods, parquet de Versailles flooring, cerused oak — the rug's continental register flatters European wood traditions
• Upholstery: ivory damask, navy velvet, dusty-rose silk — the navy frame ties to indigo upholstery without matching it exactly
• Metal: antique brass, gilt-bronze ormolu, polished nickel — unusually flexible across warm and cool metals because of the European convention
• Lighting: warm 2700K or candlelight — cool LED flattens the navy frame to indigo black, losing the rug's color signature

Best for: dining rooms (oval medallion under an oval or rectangular dining table reads architecturally inevitable), primary bedrooms with French or English casegoods, libraries with leather chairs and Persian-influenced European interiors, formal-but-not-stiff living rooms. Particularly strong in older Sacramento homes (Land Park, East Sacramento, Curtis Park bungalows) where European-tradition antique furniture is common.

Skip if the brief is strictly Persian-tradition with no European mediation — the navy color-blocked frame is a deliberate signal of the Aubusson register. For pure Persian formal register, use the Kashan sibling. Also skip in strongly modern-minimalist rooms; the oval medallion reads as period reference, not as abstract pattern.
