This week was unexpected magic being my first trip to Utah's West Desert. It was the spring of 2009, when I first set foot in the Onaqui Mountains of Utah, a place that has now drawn me back for countless visits each year.
Each trip there is a muse, a certain horse who stands out and captures me with their beauty and presence. Amidst the vast breathtaking landscape, this horse of remarkable stature seemd to be in my eye sight everywhere I turned. A powerful leader with barely a mark on him, a stunning family band and a quiet strength I learned over time was ultimately what it takes to be a respected stallion in the wild.
In the vast, untamed expanse of the wilderness, where nature's beauty reigns supreme, a striking stallion caught the eye of a young filly. His powerful presence and stunning appearance captured her attention, and a gentle courtship ensued.
As the stallion approached the filly's family, there was a respectful exchange between him and her father. No conflict arose; it was simply understood that it was time for the filly to fly the nest and start a journey of her own. Often times filly’s and their mothers are hard to separate, causing a bit of tension in the process. This one appeared as a mutual blessing, with nature dictating the rhythm of her transition from one wild family to the next.
