This is a beautiful and evocative 19th century portrait of a young woman feeding a cherry to a bird, in the tradition of 19th century romantic painting.  Most probably from France. The hands and face are painted with incredible delicacy, and one cannot help be compelled by the figure's wistful expression as she emerges from the darkness.
In a lovely gilt frame.
Heavily varnished with crackelure throughout and some surface scratches. Nicks and small losses to the frame, some of which have been retouched with paint.
