One of two by the same maker I purchased at the New Hampshire antique show, both painted on waxed canvas stretched over solid wood panel, with the waxing of the canvas lending an delicate, atmospheric quality that photos can't quite capture. And the soft, subtle palette on this one makes lends it a particular sort of otherworldliness, as if hovering in the space of one's memory. The door of this lonely little cabin reads 4th Sec Co H, which I presume points to military use, perhaps referring to Company H of the 4th U.S. Infantry, known especially for their actions at the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. I believe it is possible this painting is about that old--or at least soon enough after to be grounded in memories of the war. It is signed at lower right, first name hard to read but last name looks like Hicks to me, and then what looks like Md, I presume for Maryland. Feels like a sort of memorial to me, spare and quiet and emotive.
7 5/8" x 5 7/16". and in lovely antique condition.
