Phillip Parker King’s master map of Western Australia’s unknown shores
Before Western Australia had ports, towns or shipping lanes, its vast west coast was one of the least-known shorelines on Earth. This extraordinary British Admiralty chart, first surveyed by Commander Phillip Parker King, RN between 1818 and 1822 aboard H.M.S. Bathurst, and later refined by Commander John Lort Stokes in 1842, captures the moment this immense frontier was finally mapped into existence.
Engraved by J. Walker and published by the Hydrographical Office of the Admiralty, this was the chart that turned Australia’s western edge from blank space into a navigable coastline.
This is not a decorative map.
It is the document that revealed Western Australia to the world.
This powerful Admiralty sheet lays out the west coast in uncompromising technical detail.
