What is a Tartan ring? A Tartan ring features a carved cross-hatched pattern — vertical bars cross-cut by horizontal divisions, creating a grid of small rectangular tiles etched into the metal. The name comes from the cross-hatched plaid pattern of traditional Scottish Tartan textiles, and the design is also referred to as crosshatched or plaid pattern in jewellery trade catalogues.

What's the difference between a Tartan and a fluted ring? A fluted ring has only vertical grooves carved into the metal (like the columns of a Doric temple). A Tartan ring has both vertical and horizontal cross-cuts, creating a grid pattern. Fluted reads more architectural and minimalist; Tartan reads more textured and editorial.

Is the Tartan cigar band a unisex ring? Yes. Like all our cigar bands, the Tartan version is genderless by design — the wide profile suits any hand, and the carved texture reads equally well as a men's wedding ring or as a unisex statement piece on any finger.

Can it be worn as a wedding ring or a fine jewellery piece? Both. The Tartan cigar band works beautifully as a contemporary wedding ring (particularly for couples wanting a band with serious character without diamonds), and equally well as a stand-alone fine jewellery piece on any finger.

Will the Tartan texture wear away over time? The pattern is carved into the metal at depth, so it doesn't wear away with normal daily use. Over many years, the high points of the raised surface will gradually soften — but we offer complimentary refinishing as part of lifetime aftercare to restore the texture any time you'd like.

What finish suits a Tartan band best? The contrast between the recessed grid and the raised surface comes through most dramatically on a high-polish finish (mirror surface). Satin or brushed finishes soften the contrast and give the texture a quieter, more refined look. Each gives the same band a different personality.

Can the band be engraved? Yes — internal engraving is offered on every Deltora cigar band. The Tartan texture is on the exterior; the interior is smooth and entirely free for engraving.
