I purchased this small watercolor from a dealer in Pennsylvania, about 2 minutes after it appeared on Ebay I believe. And Pennsylvania is certainly where it was made, quintessential Fraktur style naive watercolor, c. 1860s-80s I believe. Nothing I love more than a watercolor drawing like this, and a what a pair these two boys in their rich red tunics and orange pants and bright yellow collars with blue ties, heads together as if conspiring. And with that fantastic pencil drawn hand with five big fingers at left. Plus the monogram reads like AM (as in I AM....) It is ever harder to find watercolor drawings of this sort, but I will forever hunt for them.
Framed, under glass: 5 7/16" x 3 7/8". Sight 4" x 2 1/2". I put the drawing in this wooden frame, which is not as old as the drawing, but has about 100 years on it I believe, and suits it well. Drawing unmounted, paper of the drawing folded just a bit at left and right edges to fit in frame, and simply backed with a couple of pieces of archival mat. All in very good condition.
