David McLeod initially began his career as a sculptor. In 1985 he began a change of scale exploring small scale carving. His interest Japanese jewellery technique lead to him completing a masters degree on the subject. David has taught in tertiary institutions around New ZealandWorking with shell, stone, precious metals and gemstones, McLeod allows each material to lead. His pieces are guided by their natural character through colour, density, surface and structure, resulting in jewellery that feels considered, balanced and quietly resolved.

Alongside this sensitivity to material is a commitment to clarity. Many of his designs are simple and contemporary, where form, proportion and finish carry the work without the need for embellishment or explanation. The result is jewellery that is understated and distinctive, pieces that sit comfortably in everyday life while retaining a strong sense of authorship.
