Discover the power and precision of the Lewmar H2GD Windlass, a game-changer for sailors navigating vessels from 30 to 50 feet. This 12V horizontal windlass masterfully combines a gypsy for 8mm (5/16-inch) chain and a drum for 14-16mm (9/16-5/8-inch) line, delivering seamless handling of mixed rope-chain rodes. Whether you're dropping anchor in choppy bays or retrieving in strong currents, its dual-direction operation puts you in complete control from the helm or deck.
Crafted with boaters' real-world needs in mind, the H2GD stands out with its low-profile design that preserves precious deck space without sacrificing strength. The integral contactor housed within the deck unit streamlines setup, slashing installation time and shielding sensitive electronics from the elements. Imagine fewer wires, less hassle, and a cleaner install that gets you back on the water faster.
Boasting a robust 1433lb (650kg) maximum pull, it's powered by a horizontal worm motor-gearbox that's built to endure relentless marine conditions. The electro-polished stainless steel components resist corrosion, while the unique "Wear & Abrasion Reduction Pattern" on the warping drum extends rode life and ensures smooth operation cycle after cycle.
Selecting the perfect windlass boils down to your boat's anchor setup and cruising style. Start by totaling the weight of your anchor plus chain (ignore rope weight for pull calculations, as it's negligible). For confident handling in wind, waves, or kelp-prone areas, multiply that total by 4—this gives your target maximum pull.
Example for a 33-foot cruiser: Say you run a 45lb anchor with 150 feet of 5/16-inch chain (about 120lbs total). Multiply by 4: 660lbs. The H2GD's 1433lb pull exceeds this comfortably, making it ideal. If your calc hits or exceeds the max pull, step up to a larger model. Pro tip: Ensure your anchor locker has ample clear space below the hawse pipe—gravity does the stowing, not the windlass. Always secure the rode to a bow cleat when anchored; the windlass is for retrieval, not tension holding.
Boat owners rave about the H2GD's plug-and-play ethos. Position it forward of your anchor locker, align the gypsy with your lead, and secure the single unit with through-bolts. Route power from a dedicated battery (fused appropriately), connect the rocker switch, and test. The protected contactor eliminates external boxes, reducing failure points from UV or spray. In under an hour, most DIYers have it operational, freeing up time for that sunset cruise.
Lewmar's H2GD isn't just functional—it's resilient. The anodized aluminum base shrugs off saltwater, while composite elements dampen vibration for quieter runs. Dual sealing keeps water out, even during green water washdowns. Regular rinse-downs with fresh water and annual gearbox checks keep it humming. Sailors report years of trouble-free service on everything from coastal hoppers to bluewater adventurers.
In the unpredictable world of anchoring, reliability trumps all. The H2GD delivers consistent torque without gear slip, even with fouled rodes. Its low amp draw suits standard house banks, and the responsive controls make short work of 200-foot sets. Pair it with quality G4 chain and nylon rode for a setup that inspires trust every time you let go—or haul back.
It features a gypsy calibrated for 8mm (5/16-inch) G4 chain and a drum suited for 14-16mm (9/16-5/8-inch) three-strand or plaited line, handling mixed rodes effortlessly.
Optimized for vessels from 9m (30ft) to 15m (50ft), it provides ample pull for typical anchor setups in these sizes.
Yes, the kit contains the built-in dual-direction contactor, circuit breaker, rocker switch, and pre-matched gypsy/drum for quick setup.
It delivers a maximum pull of 1433lb (650kg), ideal for anchors and chain combos up to safe cruising margins.
Fully sealed and waterproof, it requires minimal upkeep—just occasional freshwater rinses to maintain peak performance.
The contactor is embedded in the deck unit, protecting it from damage, reducing components, and speeding up installation.
Absolutely, it supports raising and lowering independently, giving precise control over your anchor rode.
The latest generation 'H Series' of horizontal windlasses from Lewmar, the H2 and H3 windlasses are designed for boats from 9m (30ft) to 15m (50ft).
The contactor is integral to the deck unit. This saves valuable installation time as it reduces the number of components in the system. In addition the contactor is protected.
This has now been combined with a stylish, low profile design that takes up the minimum of valuable foredeck area.
The electro-polished stainless steel rode management system will handle both rope and chain. Dual direction operation gives total control when both raising and lowering.
Kits include: Built in dual direction contactor, circuit breaker, rocker switch and gypsy/drum for 5/16" G4 chain and 9/16-5/8" line
What size windlass would best suit your boat?
If you have a 10m (33 ft) boat, typically a 270kg (600 lb) pull windlass would be selected. The rule to crosscheck your windlass selection is to add the total weight of the chain and the weight of the anchor together. Rope is very light and does not affect the actual lifting performance of the windlass, but can be factored in. For safe cruising in all types of conditions and sea areas, Lewmar recommends that you multiply the total weight of your anchor and chain by 4. This number should be less than the maximum pull of the windlass you have selected. Should your findings be at or more than the maximum pull, select the next largest windlass. The windlass does not stow the anchor rode in the locker. Gravity stows the rode in the locker. There must be a free and clear area under the hawse pipe for the incoming rode to lie; if not the rode will jam. Your windlass is a retrieval device; the windlass retrieves the anchor and rode. A windlass is not a high load bearing device. When at anchor your rode should be secured to a cleat or other mooring point on the bow.
