Pā`ū Riders are Hawaiian women horseback riders who wear long, colorful skirts and are a cherished symbol of Hawaiian culture and heritage, nowadays often featured in local parades and festivals.

The tradition dates back to the early 19th century when horses were first introduced to the islands. Hawaiian women quickly became skilled equestrians and chose to ride astride (rather than sidesaddle) using lengths of fabric to cover and protect their formal dresses while traveling on dusty or muddy trails. Over time, the practical attire evolved into the elaborate and elegant display seen today. The revitalization of this tradition in the 20th century preserves the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) history and culture.
