The performance required of a naturally aspirated engine filter is dust suction ability and appropriate suction resistance. Although it is generally recognized that dust suction ability is necessary, it is not well known that suction resistance is important. Even when the throttle is open, air pulsates in the intake pipe due to the opening and closing of the intake valve. Unless the cam profile (working angle)* changes, the time the valve is closed increases in proportion to the increase in rotational speed, so the air-fuel mixture that is not drawn into the cylinder accumulates just before the valve, which increases the pressure. This causes a backflow phenomenon. If a filter with low suction resistance is installed, pulsation cannot be suppressed because there is no pressure difference between the inside of the intake pipe and the outside air, and the backflow of pressure forms a wall, reducing filling efficiency. A similar situation occurs near the throttle valve. Low-resistance type filters, which are designed based on the logic valid for supercharged engines (reduction of intake resistance = improvement of intake efficiency), have difficulty generating sufficient negative pressure in the suction, and are susceptible to throttle changes. In contrast, the amount of inhalation fluctuates dramatically. As a result, it becomes difficult to maintain a constant flow velocity in the intake air, resulting in poor response over a wide rotation range. “Hyper Flow Filter” is a genuine replacement type dry air filter developed with top priority on improving filling efficiency.
