Perennial wildflower with pink and white striped flowers and bright green, succulent, edible leaves. Grows 1 ft. tall. Found in moist woods, in wetlands, in part or deep-shade, and in the sun on the coast. Extremely long bloom period, from February to June.
A great garden plant that should be more widely used as a groundcover, it will bloom in deep shade, such as under willows or oaks, and spreads nicely. It is a relative of Indian, or Miner's, lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata), which lends to an alternate name, Siberian Miner's Lettuce, and its leaves, though not as succulent, or also tasty.
We have selected for the pink form but it sometimes is so pale a pink as to be white.
