Harley-Davidson Sportster engine, tappet covers (sometimes called tappet block covers, valve covers or rocker covers) primarily serve two key purposes: 

Protecting the valve train components: 

The tappet covers act as a barrier to prevent dirt, dust, and other contaminants from entering the intricate valve train mechanisms, including the tappets/valve lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, valve springs, and valve stems.

Containing the lubricating oil: 

The valve train components are continuously lubricated with oil during engine operation. 

Without the tappet covers, this oil would spray freely throughout the engine compartment and potentially leak onto the ground, leading to pollution and a reduction in the engine's vital lubricant. 

The covers ensure the oil remains contained within the engine, lubricating the moving parts and preventing leaks. 

Beyond these functional aspects, tappet covers can also be used for customization purposes, with aftermarket options available in various finishes like chrome or black, to enhance the engine's aesthetic appeal. 

They can also help to reduce noise emanating from the valvetrain.
