Beethoven (1770-1827)

Description:

The opera "Fidelio" by Beethoven, which was completed in 1814, has undergone numerous revisions over the years. Based on a libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouillais, Pierre Gaveau's "Leonor" (video NAXOS DVD:2.110591/Blu-ray:NBD0085V) was produced in 1798, followed by Ferdinand Paër's "Leonora" in 1804, both of which were very popular. Both were highly popular. Around the same time, Beethoven was also commissioned to compose an opera on this theme, which he completed over the course of a year beginning in 1804. Leonore" was premiered in 1805. However, for various reasons, the premiere was a complete failure. The work was then revised and became the "Fidelio" as it is known today. This production of "Leonore" by Opera Lafayette uses a revised edition by musicologist Will Crutchfield, who aims to reproduce the first draft of the work, and includes a rare world premiere of the Florestan aria, which Beethoven deleted in the revision process. The role of Leonore is played by Nathalie Pollan, who specializes in baroque opera. The roles of Florestan, Marzellina, and Don Fernando are played by the same singers as in Pierre Gaveau's "Leonore," which was also performed by the same opera company, adding further interest to the comparison of the two works.
