For light EMI/RF shielding or decorative inlay work, 0.2mm–0.5mm is typically sufficient. For structural brackets, heat exchanger baffles, or parts that will be drilled and fastened, 1mm–3mm provides the rigidity needed. If you are unsure, start with 1mm as a general-purpose thickness that balances workability and strength.
CuNi 90/10 (90% copper, 10% nickel) offers better thermal conductivity and is more commonly used in heat exchanger and marine applications. Cupronickel alloys are significantly more corrosion-resistant than plain copper or mild steel. They resist oxidation in air and perform well in humid and mildly saline environments. Yes. Thinner panels (0.2mm–1mm) can be cut with metal shears, tin snips, or a CNC laser cutter. Thicker panels (1.5mm–3mm) are best handled with an angle grinder, jigsaw with a metal blade, or CNC router. Always use appropriate PPE and secure the workpiece before cutting.
Yes. Cupronickel solders well with standard silver-bearing or lead-free solders, and brazes effectively with copper-phosphorus or silver-alloy brazing rods. Clean the surface with a suitable flux before joining to ensure a strong bond. TIG and MIG welding are also viable with the correct cupronickel filler wire.
Select the next size up from your finished dimensions to allow for cutting margins. For example, if your finished part is 90×90mm, the 100×100mm panel gives you a 5mm margin on each side. If your part is 90×180mm, the 100×200mm panel is the closest fit. This approach minimizes material waste while ensuring you have enough stock to work with.
