Description:

This is the 53rd volume in the "Contemporary Japanese Composers" series, which systematically and continuously documents the results of Japanese creative activities. This time, we present Fumiko Kohjiba (1952-), a composer whose works cover a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, choral, and educational works. About her own search, Kohjiba remarks, "In this age of computers, I think it is important to create living music, and it is meaningful to seek new sounds and to send out messages through music. In 1985, the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II, the "Hiroshima Requiem" was featured in the "Hiroshima Peace Concert" proposed by Leonard Bernstein and premiered by the EC Youth Orchestra under the direction of Eiji Oue. Inspired by the poem by Taro Naka, "The Birds of Fautrier" is a piece in which the clarinet does not dare to confront the orchestra, but instead freely spells out the sound without staying in the flow of the music. The "Seven Profiles of the Unweathered" was composed 20 years after the first performance of "Hiroshima Requiem," with the intention of looking at the "atomic bomb" with a sincere heart once again, reaffirming it within oneself, and not letting it fade away. And "Wadatsumi no Nami" is dedicated to the land of Tohoku and its inhabitants, while thinking of "Wadatsumi," the divine spirit of the sea and the god who protects the sea, in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The compositional power of this group of works, backed by outstanding technique, is full of individuality that is hard to find anywhere else in the contemporary world of composition. FONTEC
