SLS vs. SLSA

• Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an inexpensive surfactant used to create big bubbles.  Because SLS has a small molecular size, it penetrates the skin easily and can strip moisture and nutrients from the skin, leaving it dry or irritated .  It is widely used in mass‑market shampoos, soaps and detergents because it is cheap, but its degreasing action makes it harsh for leave‑on bath products .
• Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (SLSA), sometimes called Lathanol, is a different ingredient.  It is derived from coconut and palm oils and has a much larger molecular size, so it sits on the skin’s surface rather than penetrating it .  This mild, plant‑derived surfactant creates a rich, foamy lather while being gentle and non‑irritating .  SLSA is hydrophilic, meaning it dissolves easily and rinses away cleanly without leaving the skin feeling dry.
