“When the black swans fly south, Clippie Nancarrow, a restless young engineer and pilot working at an airport in Dubbo, feels that it is time he too was moving again.  Then comes the letter.  Clippies’s uncle, who has been living in a practically uninhabited part of Tasmania, has died. Leaving Clippie everything he possesses.  Clippie sets off at once to inspect his new property.  Beverley Rose, a student office worker at the same airport, is also going to Tasmania and the two meet up again in the ‘Wilderness’ where they get to know the Steinhausers, owners of a small tin mine, Hans Bekker, a fisherman, and also the Professor, who is studying the rare plant and animal life around Lake Tara.  Clippie and Bev come to know and love the “Wilderness’ and its people, But its days are numbered…”
