Long story short, this is certainly not like the old Muse era that we all come to love, but it's for sure a improvement from the album Drones and Simulation Theory in my opinion. And for the most important part it's much more entertaining.

Perhaps the problem here is that Muse venture too close to the pop rock scene, but that's not a unique situation. Consider how Queen evolved from their early-mid seventies pomp progressive rock to the very pop(ular) sounds they recorded in the mid eighties. And these days, Queen are almost universally revered!
