Green Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) is a traditional British hedge plant, widely recognised for its presence in gardens and urban landscapes across the country.

Introduced from Japan in 1885, this hardy evergreen is known for its oval-shaped leaves. It has since become one of the most commonly grown shrubs in the UK due to its high adaptability. Ligustrum ovalifolium can thrive in a variety of soil conditions and grow in shaded areas, including under trees and in spaces where tree roots are present.

While colder regions or poor soils may cause Ligustrum ovalifolium to lose some or all of its leaves during winter, it remains resilient and continues to provide reliable coverage. If left to grow naturally, it produces white flowers and black berries, although regular trimming typically prevents this. To maintain a neat, dense hedge, it’s recommended to trim at least three times per year, shaping it with a slightly narrower top to ensure it stays leafy from top to bottom.
