To record this album, the band employed at least 42 musicians and spent more than a year in the studio, far exceeding the initial amount given by the record company. During the two years that the album was recorded, the band was plagued with a variety of creative, personal, and professional problems; MCA, Warner Brothers, and Steely Dan engaged in a three-way legal battle over the rights to release the album. After its release, jazz musician Keith Jarrett threatened to sue the band for plagiarism of Jarrett's song "'Long As You Know You're Living Yours" and was given co-writing credit for the title track. The album marked an important stylistic shift for the band, introducing a more minimalist format that emphasized groove and atmosphere.The harmonic and intricate chord changes that characterized early Steely Dan songs are less prominent on this album, and while the songs on this record tend to revolve around a single rhythm or mood, complex chord progressions are still present, especially on "Babylon Sisters" and "Glamour Profession. Progressions were still present as well. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker worked together on Steely Dan's last studio album until 2000. It reached #9 on the U.S. album charts and was certified a platinum seller." Hey Nineteen" reached #10 on the U.S. singles chart and #1 in Canada.
