By 1974, the Australian car market was changing. European imports were arriving in growing numbers, and Holden needed to prove the Monaro could still hold its own. Building on the strong foundations of the HQ, the HJ Monaro GTS, introduced in October 1974, answered that challenge with a bold facelift and a raft of meaningful refinements.

The visual changes were anything but subtle. Extra-strength bumpers, a blacked-out grille, wrap-around rear lights, aggressive side vents, and distinctive decals gave the HJ a more assertive presence than its predecessor. Factory front and rear spoilers were added, with the deep rear spoiler in particular drawing the eye along the car's characteristic sloping boot line.

Inside, the GTS received full foam high-backed seats available across a range of trims and colours. The sports instrument panel (which is unique to this model) featured recessed gauges with international symbols and multiple ventilation outlets, giving the cabin a purposeful, driver-focused feel that matched the car's exterior intent.

Under the bonnet, Holden upgraded the local 308 engine to compensate for the de-tuned Chevrolet 350, a casualty of tightening US anti-pollution regulations. The result was a car that retained its performance credentials at a time when many manufacturers were retreating from them.

The HJ Monaro GTS remains one of the most beloved entries in the Monaro lineage as a car that rose to meet its moment and became an enduring icon of Australian automotive history.
