In 2022, the 45th anniversary of their debut, the 40th anniversary of their first visit to Japan, and the 20th anniversary of Joe Strummer's death... The Clash will release the 40th anniversary edition of "Combat Rock"! The original "Combat Rock" album was released on May 14, 1982 (Japan edition: May 30, 1982). The album was the last work by The Clash, consisting of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simenon, and Topher Heedon, and featured the band's best-known songs "Stay or Go" and "Rock the Casbah," fan favorites "Strait to Hell" and "The Curse of the Clash. Stray to Hell" and "Know Your Rights" (Claim Your Rights), both fan favorites. It was their biggest selling album to date and a worldwide hit, charting at #2 in the UK and #7 in the US. The Clash played 17 consecutive shows at the Bond's Casino nightclub in New York City in 1981. Soon after that pivotal performance, they returned to London to rehearse and record at The People's Hall in the Republic of Frestonia, a squatter's zone around Latimer Road.The band went on to tour throughout East and Southeast Asia. The photograph chosen for the album sleeve of Combat Rock/The People's Hall was taken by Penny Smith in Thailand during the tour. The album "Combat Rock" was a testament to the Clash's constant evolution, which was in no small part influenced by the Vietnam War, which had only ended a few years earlier. A good example is "Sean Flynn," which was inspired by the disappearance in a war zone of a photojournalist who was also the son of a movie star. The band's musical interests were also multifaceted, with "Ghetto Accused" featuring the revelatory narrative of poet Allen Ginsberg and "Over Powered by Funk" featuring raps by graffiti artist Futura. Much has been said in various forums about The Clash's influence on the worlds of punk, post-punk, and indie rock.In particular, "Combat Rock" has also spawned a movement of rediscovery from a new generation, most notably when "Stay or Go" was used in a key scene in the first season of Netflix's hit "Stranger Things: The Unknown World. In addition, "Strait to Hell" was sampled in rapper M.I.A.'s "Paper Plains," making it known to an even wider audience.
