The Bella Quartet, an up-and-coming quartet from France, will perform works by Debussy and Magnard, composers from their home country! The Bella Quartet is a promising quartet that was called "fearless children" in France at the time of its formation. Taking their name from Béla Bartók's "Béla," the quartet has of course kept Bartók as its core repertoire, but has also been actively working on modern and contemporary works. More than 10 years after its formation, the Quartet has shown its unique character, and the new recordings are Debussy and Magnard. Debussy (1862-1918) is well known for his string quartet, composed in 1893 and premiered in Paris in the same year, and dedicated to the Ysaÿe Quartet. Magnard (1865-1914) studied with Massenet at the Conservatoire de Paris before turning to Franck and later to Dandy. He also wrote operas that were strongly influenced by Wagner. Many of his works are brilliantly instrumental, and the string quartet recorded here was composed between 1902 and 1903.The string quartet is composed like a suite with beautiful melodies typical of Magnard, and each movement has its own title (1st movement: "Sonata", 2nd movement: "Serenade", 3rd movement: "Funeral Song", 4th movement: "Dance").
