Woelfl, Joseph (1773-1812)
Description:
Born in Salzburg, Josef Wölffl took violin and piano lessons from the Mozart family and began performing as a violinist at the age of seven. He was also known as an excellent keyboard player and was regarded as "Beethoven's rival" in Vienna. The three sonatas on this album, Op. 6, were dedicated to Beethoven, and all of them are in three movements (rapid, slow, and rapid) in a neat style reminiscent of Haydn and Mozart, but with many technical passages. The "Piano Sonata in D major" was written in London, where he settled in his late years, and is a substantial work with a variation in the second movement that is colored by improvisatory passages, which is reminiscent of the early Romanticism.
