La Celestina is ballet music by Carmelo Bernaola, a member of the group of composers known as "Spain's 51st Generation." Accompanied by recitations, the music is impressive for its intense and colorful orchestral tone. Bernaola was one of the most influential composers of Spanish music in the second half of the 20th century. He studied composition in Italy with Goffredo Petrassi and Bruno Maderna, conducting with Serge Celibidacke, and attended the Darmstadt Summer School of Contemporary Music, where he was influenced by Stockhausen, Boulez, and NONO. In 1962, he returned to Madrid and began composing in earnest. After writing "Espaciosvariados" in serie form and more than 100 soundtracks, he released "La Celestina" and the cantata "Euskadi" in the 1990s, both of which are included on this album. He has established himself steadfastly as a leader of contemporary music. He was also a talented teacher, and on this album you can also hear his student Helena Ballena's "JASO. Nacho de Paz, who is in charge of performance, is a conductor born in 1974.He is known for his active engagement with 20th and 21st century works, including serving as Arturo Tamayo's assistant and conducting the Ensemble Modern.
