A large number of models of the Douglas DC-9 in Swissair colors have already been produced over the years. The DC-9 was the Swiss airline's main type on short and medium-haul routes for a little over two decades, from 1966 to 1988. No fewer than 22 of the stretched DC-9-30 variant were in service with Swissair - including HB-IFW as a unique aircraft: she was the only full-freighter in the Swissair fleet and was taken over as such from the Douglas factory in 1969. She was withdrawn from service in Switzerland in 1984, but this did not mean the end for this DC-9 freighter: to this day (as of January 2025) she is still used for cargo flights, now registered in Mexico.
