Knowing how to communicate and navigate effectively is the foundation of every successful backcountry trip. This course teaches you how to use modern tools like CalTopo and handheld radios, and more importantly, how to think through the process so you can move with confidence in any terrain.

You’ll learn the same techniques our cadre uses during training first responders, tracking operations, and remote field training.

What You’ll Learn

Navigation Training Using CalTopo & Paper Maps

• How to properly organize CalTopo settings for personal field use

• How to create, save, and recall waypoints

• Setting up breadcrumb tracks and trails

• Organizing map layers and data for use on both mobile and desktop

• How to integrate CalTopo with printed maps for backup and routine navigation

• How to easily share routes, tracks, and planning info with others

Backcountry Radio Communications

• Radio etiquette for normal and emergency use

• Operating basics: power, menus, and commonly used functions

• How to monitor multiple channels in the field

• How to scan efficiently to detect nearby traffic

• Choosing the right antenna for your needs

• Using radios to enhance group safety and coordination

This class includes both classroom instruction and practical field exercises. You’ll learn how to use your tools, then you’ll apply your new skills outside so the concepts stick.
