After careful stirring, heat exchange ensures that the particles and the water have the same temperature ϑ_m. The heat quantity released by the particles:

The specific heat capacity of water c₂ is assumed as a given. The temperature ϑ₁ corresponds to the temperature of the steam. Therefore, the specific heat quantity c₁ can be calculated from the measurement quantities ϑ₂, ϑ_m, m₁ and m₂.
