The Machina Expedition skid plate for the BMW R1300 GS and R1300 GSA (2023–2025) is a 4mm aluminium protection plate engineered for riders who demand maximum undercarriage protection on serious off-road terrain and long-distance adventure riding. It uses a multi-layer construction — a stainless steel base plate, the aluminium main plate, and reinforced nylon sliders — that standard single-layer skid plates do not have. WHAT MAKES THE EXPEDITION PLATE DIFFERENT FROM A STANDARD SKID PLATE? A stainless steel base plate distributes impact load across multiple mounting points on both the aluminium plate and the engine — preventing stress concentration at any single point. On top sit reinforced nylon sliders that absorb impact energy and provide a low-friction sliding surface, allowing the bike to glide over rocks and obstacles rather than catch and tip. WHAT IS THE CORRUGATED CHANNEL DESIGN FOR? The fins and veins across the plate surface are a structural engineering choice — not just aesthetic. The corrugated channel shape maximises rigidity and strength of the 4mm aluminium plate without adding unnecessary weight. ARE THE NYLON SLIDERS REPLACEABLE? Yes. The reinforced nylon sliders are replaceable. If they wear down after heavy off-road use you can replace just the sliders without replacing the entire plate — extending the life of your investment.
