A spectacular travelogue SACD hybrid disc featuring Kellas and 18 top musicians. Jean-Guyan Kélas is one of the world's most celebrated cellists. From Baroque to contemporary works, and even collaborating with musicians from other cultures in the "Music of Thrace" project, he has captivated the world with his breathtakingly precise and intelligent performances. Now, BIS presents "Nomaden," an album of cross-cultural exchanges between Kelas and 18 musicians. It is the story of a journey in which the protagonist (Kelas) "meets" and dialogues with 18 musicians from different backgrounds in different lands. It is not a concerto for cello and ensemble, but rather a concertante for cello and soloists from different cultures. It is in 38 movements, with an introduction followed by 11 passages and 25 pieces reminiscent of the music of various lands, and culminating in an epilogue. Nomadic Peoples was commissioned by the Amsterdam Cello Biennale for Jean-Guyan Keras and the Atlas Ensemble.It was premiered on October 28, 2016, and this disc is a recording of the premiere (and the November 5 session recording). The performances by Kelas and world-class players on a variety of instruments are truly exciting, with the cello and erhu engaging in a back-and-forth exchange of minimal-music-like passages, and the cello engaging in a microtonal battle with the Indian stringed instrument, the sarangi. One can't help but think that these highly challenging pieces were only possible because of Kellas. The Atlas Ensemble is made up of players from China, Japan, India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, and Europe, all of whom play instruments unique to their region. The entire program consists of pieces written by Bonsu, with no traditional music inserted. Bonsu has collaborated with the Atlas Ensemble for 14 years, and this work is the culmination of that collaboration. Some of the players in the ensemble can't read Western music at all, but improvise brilliantly, while others play Western music, no matter how difficult, but don't improvise much.Bonsu's aim is to have all members develop their music in a realm that transcends the potential of each individual.
