The Unicorn at the Fountain Wall Tapestry is an intricate Jacquard tapestry, woven in a wool blend by master Flemish weavers. The originals are a set of seven wall hangings woven in the 15th Century depicting the Unicorn hunt. This panel shows the Unicorn drinking amid other beasts at the fountain, with the hunter and dogs closing in. Note the`mille fleur' style, among which can be seen are pansies, ragged robin, violets, harebells and other wild flowers.
Gold, silk and fine wools were used in the weaving of the original which was woven in France for the family La Rochefoucauld which adorned their Chateau of Verteuil. The series was sold for $ 1,100,000 dollars in 1923 to Mr J.D.Rockefeller and can now be seen in the Metropolitan Museum New York.
