“The High Roof is a novel of intimate human relationships, set in the beautiful Cape Peninsula with its many social and racial distinctions.
The central character, Kirsten, has been disillusioned in adolescence by the second marriage of her lovely, sophisticated mother, Terry, to Pierre Delaporte, twelve years her mother’s junior.  There is no longer a place in Terry’s life for her daughter, and Kirsten is “exiled” to school abroad for four years.  Her resentment at feeling “not wanted” conditions her subsequent outlook on life, marriage and motherhood with far-reaching effects.”
