Sydney was the first European colony to be established in Australia, by Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788. It is the most populous city in Australia and on the continent of Oceania. Its residents are known as Sydneyites or Sydneysiders in English and Sydnéens in French. Sydney is an international tourist destination that is as celebrated for its historic central district, The Rocks, as for its two best-known sights, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It is home to Australia’s most important museums, such as the Australian Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Sydney Museum. Sydney’s Luna Park is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Two hundred and fifty different languages are spoken in the city, and a third of its inhabitants speak a language other than English at home.
